Introduction

After the success of Star Wars: Rebel Assault two years earlier, LucasArts released Star Wars: Rebel Assault II - The Hidden Empire in 1995. It was really more of the same in terms of game format - an "on rails" arcade shooting game with updated graphics and multimedia. You continue your adventures as Rookie One from the earlier title, this time after receiving a distress signal from an area in space where ships are known to have disappeared. What they find is The Empire, working on a secret project to create cloaked ships.

You fly in A-Wing and X-Wing craft, but also speeder bikes and the Millennium Falcon. Like the first game there is also an on-foot level.

The game engine was revamped for Rebel Assault II, with updated multimedia, FMV, and audio. In 1995 this technology was of blending CGI with real-life actors was cutting edge (though the acting was fairly weak), and the fact this was done throughout as you played the game was astonishing.

Rebel Assault II was applauded for its technological drive forward but was let down primarily for being too simplistic and easy to win, though it did introduce the option to customise the difficulty level.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault II - The Hidden Empire was also sold as part of the compilation, The LucasArts Archives Vol.II - Star Wars Collection, which also included Star Wars: Rebel Assault and Star Wars: TIE Fighter (the CD-ROM version). The game was also re-released in 1996 to run on Windows 95.

From where can it be run?

The game must be installed to your hard disk, and the original CD-ROM must be present in your CD drive.

 

Copy Protection

Star Wars: Rebel Assault II has CD copy protection (it checks for the presence of the original CD-ROM each time the game is started).

 

How to Setup

Insert the CD-ROM and run REBEL2. This starts the game launcher and configuration process. There is only a minimal installation that gets written to your hard disk - just the game configuration file(s) that get stored in C:\REBEL2 (by default).

The Difficulty Editor - choose from the built-in levels at the bottom or move the cursor keys to a value and enter a new one. These get stored in C:\REBEL2\REBEL2.CUS

Rebel Assault II - The Hidden Empire came out around the same time as DirectX 1.0, but did not require it. The game used proprietary code for its FMV / multimedia in what they called the INSANE game engine.

To run the game, go to your CD-ROM drive and run REBEL2.EXE. From the game launcher menu, choose the top item: 'Play Rebel Assault II'

 

Problems

There is an extensive troubleshooting guide on the CD-ROM. Run the Game Launcher using REBEL2.EXE and choose 'Troubleshooting'.

Symptom: The game hangs on startup.
Cause: Your audio setup is incorrect or you have a resource conflict.
Resolution: Reconfigure your audio with 'No Sound' and try again. If it works, you know the problem was audio. Investigate what IRQs and DMA channels are in use by other devices such as your mouse or parallel port and be sure to reconfigure them so they are not being used by more than one device.

Symptom: The game fails to start properly.
Cause: Rebel Assault uses a DOS extender (DOS4/GW), which can be incompatible on some systems.
Resolution: Run the game using an alternative DOS extender - there are four versions of DOS4/GW on the CD in the Support folder.

To Quit the Game

From the 'Main Game Menu', choose the bottom item: 'Return to Launcher'. Then from the Game Launcher choose the bottom item: 'Quit Rebel Assault II' to return to the DOS prompt.

I have no additional files for Rebel Assault II.

 

Save Games

There is no save option in Rebel Assault II. Instead, after completing each group of levels you are given a password which can be used later to jump straight to the next stage. Different passwords exist depending on the difficulty setting you have chosen.
Rebel Assault saves your high scores in a file called REBEL2.PTS in the game directory. It is not text-readable or editable.
