Word 1.15 1983

1983 Microsoft released the first version of Microsoft Word for DOS on the IBM PC. It is a character cell / text mode based application, but can make use of a Microsoft mouse - which had also just been released. Microsoft Word for DOS was heavily promoted as "WYSIWYG", although its limited on-screen formatting made that a bit of a joke.

1987

The DisplayWrite 4 installer is very picky about hardware configuration. It does not run properly in DOSBox. It can get confused about free drive space if you are using a hard drive larger than around 32mb (the limit at the time).

It also expects a Microsoft Serial, Microsoft Bus, Visi-On serial, or Mouse Systems serial mouse. It does not support PS/2 mice and does not utilize the MOUSE.COM dos driver.

You can download the original manuals here.

It is still a text-mode program, but there is a seperate DisplayWrite Composer program that provides graphical previewing.
