Introduction

Sam & Max: Hit the Road was a point and click adventure game released by LucasArts in 1993. It followed shortly after Maniac Mansion 2: Day of the Tentacle (1993) and was a few years after the first two Monkey Island titles (1990 and 1991).

The premise is that Sam, a dog, and Max, a rabbit, are the freelance police - private investigators who get missions from "The Commissioner". Throughout most of the game you control Sam, though Max is available to be used via the inventory. As with other LucasArts point-and-click games, you move around the screen in various locations and interact with people and objects to help you uncover clues that may help you solve the case.

Unlike their earlier adventure games where the lower part of the screen provided instant access to your list of actions and your inventory, Sam & Max did away with that, replacing them with right-mouse-click icons for look at, pick up, use and talk.

From where can it be run?

Sam & Max: Hit the Road must be installed to your hard disk. It uses a file called DISK.ID on each of the disks to detect which one is inserted. Because of this, it is not possible to copy all the floppy disk contents to a single subdirectory of your hard disk and install the game from there.

Copy Protection

The floppy disk version of Sam & Max: Hit the Road makes use of manual copy protection. This was removed in the later-released CD-ROM version.

Soon after the intro sequence, Sam and Max are frantically trying to get the right clothes to wear. You will need to dress one of them. Refer to the game manual (the "Crimestompers' Coloring Book"), and use the arrows to find the appropriate items of clothing for the appropriate character.
